The legendary Maeng Da, Does it really exist?

Maeng da, a term that has somehow become known as "pimp grade" to describe the quality or strain effects of Kratom. However, the direct Thai translation is "cockroach", and is also a slang term for pimp. Pimp as in the person who enslaves women and forces them to have sex. What does that have to do with Kratom? Why is kratom called pimp? Like most of the mysteries of Kratom, it is unknown why they call it that. Unfortunately, unlike Indonesian, which translates relatively well into english, Thai seems much more difficult. Communication using google translate does not work too well.

Researchers on the use of Kratom by People in Thailand and Southeast Asia have surmised that it may be called cockroach because of the rare condition causing the discoloration in the face of long term heavy users. This phenomenon is reportedly similar to a liver condition called hepatic face.

Most of Asia (Indonesia excluded) only recognizes one or two strains, mostly one. The other “varietal” is pucuck, which are just the baby canopy leaves known for an alkaloid profile which isn't quite as diverse, and maybe the reason it has it's "fast' effects. This could be because of the limited diversity in the alkaloid profile, which has higher concentrations of the 4 major alkaloids in Kratom, some of which are responsible for the stimulant effect.

Maeng Da is supposedly a mutation that causes pointy horn like tips to form on the ends of the leaf. This mutation is supposed to have an unusually stimulating effect. Although Kratom is illegal in Thailand, old growth trees are protected by law. These old plantations are allegedly where this Maeng Da is to be found. Lore has it that this mutation was cloned and eventually made it's way to Indonesia. Unfortunately, there isn't a lot of evidence that this mutation is genetic. It appears to be just random leaf mutations. You can't find pictures of an entire tree with these leaves anywhere. It seems like this Maeng da is a hoax.

In Indonesia, there has been an economic boom with the rise of Kratom in the US. It's like the Gold rush and everyone and their brother are Kratom "traders". A trade secret, is the almighty Borneo Kratom Association's "Bible", which contains all of the recipes for making classic strains like "Bali". he word businessman is synonymous with salesman in Indonesia. They're just making stuff up.

People who sell it definitely are not getting high on their own supply. Rarely will you run into an addict exporter. Because the country is predominantly Muslim, they are not allowed to take it. This is the biggest problem with Kratom from Indonesia, and the reason why it's so inconsistent. The people who are mixing the "strains" don't take their own product. How is this batch? They don't know. It goes untested to the states: batches are hit or miss always because of this. Indonesian "Maeng Da" is simply another blend. Some have surmised that it could be 90% red and 10% green. But, just like every "strain" in Indonesia, this varies by supplier. It appears that Maeng Da is nothing more than another lie by the Indonesian Kratom salesman.
